What Is There to Do?
Looking for quick, ready to use resources to help develop early literacy skills with your toddlers and preschoolers? Nursery rhymes and practicing the sounds of the English language are great starts!
Nursery rhymes offer playful practice with the English language through rhythm, rhyme, and repetition. Rhythm models the structure and flow of speaking. Rhyme helps tune the ear to sounds within words. Lastly, repetition gives the chance to participate in the language experience through repeated language exposures.
The sounds of the English language and the corresponding letter(s) to those sounds is known as phonics. Repeated exposure to sounds and their letters through rereading, word games, and environmental print can help with the introduction of sound and letter knowledge in a fun way.
